Why Orange Oil? The Science Behind Our Cleaner

Why Orange Oil? The Science Behind the World's Most Powerful Natural Cleaner

Orange oil isn't a gimmick. It's been the professional cleaning industry's best-kept secret for decades. Here's why.

What is orange oil?

Orange oil — technically called d-limonene — is a natural compound extracted from citrus fruit peel. When you peel an orange and feel a fine mist hit your skin, that's d-limonene. It's the same compound that gives oranges their characteristic fresh scent.

But it's not just a nice smell. D-limonene is one of the most effective naturally derived solvents on the planet — and it's been used in industrial and commercial cleaning for over 50 years.

How does it clean?

Most grease, oil and grime is non-polar — meaning water alone can't dissolve it. That's why traditional chemical degreasers use synthetic petroleum-based solvents to break it down.

D-limonene is also non-polar. So it dissolves grease and oil at a molecular level — not through harsh pH (like bleach or potassium hydroxide), but through true solvent chemistry. The orange oil surrounds grease molecules, breaks the bond holding them to the surface, and lifts them away. The biodegradable surfactants in the formula then emulsify everything so it can be wiped or rinsed clean.

Why do industrial cleaners use it?

Walk into any commercial kitchen, automotive workshop, or industrial facility and you'll find d-limonene-based degreasers. They're used for:

  • Engine degreasing and parts washing
  • Commercial kitchen hood cleaning
  • Industrial floor scrubbing machines
  • Aircraft maintenance and cleaning
  • Food-safe surface sanitation

The reason is simple: it works as well as petrochemical solvents — without the toxicity, without the fumes, and without the environmental damage.

Is it safe?

D-limonene is used in food flavouring, perfumery, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and cleaning products worldwide. At the dilutions used in our concentrate, it is:

  • ✓ Safe for use around children (once surfaces are dry)
  • ✓ Safe for use around pets
  • ✓ Biodegradable — breaks down naturally in the environment
  • ✓ Greywater and septic safe
  • ✓ Non-persistent — does not accumulate in soil or waterways

Why does Orange Kleen use real orange oil when competitors don't?

Most household cleaners labelled 'orange' or 'citrus' contain only fragrance oils — a synthetic approximation of the real thing. Real d-limonene is more expensive to source and work with than a simple alkaline solution or synthetic fragrance.

We use the real thing because it works better. A synthetic orange scent doesn't cut grease. Real orange oil does.
